The Club

Sheffield Nomads Chess Club play in the Sheffield and District Chess Association (S&DCA) League. We meet every Wednesday at 7.30 in the The Gardener's Rest a friendly real ale pub on Neepsend Lane, Sheffield. The Gardener's is an excellent venue for our home fixtures and Club Nights.

The Gardeners was flooded over the summer and is out of commission so for the moment we are based at an excellent temporary venue, The Harlequin, on Nursery Street just off The Whicker.

The Teams

After another great season in 2006/07 our A Team again won Division 1, this time with a fantastic W15 D1 L0 record, and retained the Davy Trophy. We also retained the Richardson Cup, without losing an individual game, beating  long-standing rivals Ecclesall I in the final 4-2. The B and C Teams had to strategically place themselves mid-table otherwise, according to League regulations, we may well have been forced to accept promotion, which would have stretched playing strength, and transport, beyond our limits.

New players

New players are always welcome - especially if they own a car.  If you are interested in a game contact our Club Secretary Jeremy Hamm (H) 0114 275 5934 (W) 0114 273 6116 or come down to The Harlequin on a Wednesday at about 7.30.

The League

We have three teams in the top three divisions of the Sheffield and District Chess Association League. We have players graded from a handy 80 up to a very strong 200, so whatever your playing strength we should be able to find you a match. League and Cup matches are scheduled to start at 7.30 but usually don't kick off till a bit later. The time control is one hour per player for the first 30 moves then 15 minutes per player to complete her/his moves, so matches last a maximum two and a half hours.
