Captain's Corner
During the early stages Barnby Dun appeared to be doing well.
A quick draw on board 8 seemed to confirm that this match would be no easy
pushover for us. However, we eventually found top gear with wins from Ken and
Prasun. Ken
transformed a superior position into a material advantage, and Prasun's game was
full of excitement! - his opponent had been rushing throughout in order to dash
off to work afterwards. Prasun duly got the advantage, but a mistake
in time-trouble turned the tables. However, the opponent returned the favour by
rushing one move too many. An unstoppable pawn promotion was the outcome. A
classic demonstration of the perils of over-hasty play! At least he got to work
on time. Mithun must have won at some point, and Jon escaped with a draw in a
razor-sharp Austrian Attack (Pirc Defence). After nearly 2 hours play, myself
and Chris finished almost simultaneously which gave us the
match. I had overturned some positional pressure, but in time-trouble decided to
accept a draw rather than risk playing for more. Chris outplayed his opponent
and the result never looked in doubt. Stuart was left to battle
it out with queen against rook and two pieces, and finally came out on top in a
test of endurance. A very pleasing scoreline with no losers. I think it's safe
to stay we're on form at the moment!
